• Important Notes About the Classroom animated globe

Welcome to 2nd grade!  I am excited to have your child in class this year.  I am looking forward to working with you and your child.

Schedule:  Our schedule is posted in each classroom.  Your child will also have a copy of the schedule with him/her.

School doors do not open until 7:30 a.m.  If your child arrives before this time, they must go to the cafeteria.  Please remember, in the afternoon, to pick up children at the east entrance only.  It is mandatory YOU pick them up at parent pick up. Students are not to walk across the parking lot.

Classroom Procedures:  Classwork, Discipline, Tardies, Absences, Attendance

Classwork/Homework – The only homework your student should come home with each night is to study their spelling words and read a chapter in our group book.  That is all!

Graded papers will come home every day.  Your child will have a tab marked “Graded Papers” in their G.O. Binder.  Please check here for all graded papers.

Heading on papers:  I will expect the same heading on all papers.  An example of the heading is below:

     First and last name                                                      Subject

    Date (assignment is given)

If your child has more than studying spelling words or read in their book, please e-mail me.  I do not assign homework just to give homework.  If your child is having homework at night, either they are not working in class, or there may be special circumstances that either you are not aware of, or that I am not aware of. Just call or send a message on Class Dojo if you have concerns.  Communication is the key!

Reading – Your child can expect to have 75 minutes of reading on a weekly basis outside of school time.  Students will be required to read AR books that total at least a set minimum of points (point minimum will increase each six weeks), at their level in each six weeks.  In order to participate in reading incentive parties, the student must read the minimum number of points.  Students will be expected to test on AR books.

Discipline – Students must follow all rules of the classroom such as:  raising hand to speak, being respectful of others, following directions, working quietly, turning in class work when due, etc.  I try to handle misbehavior by reinforcing positive actions, but misbehavior will also result in a loss of recess privileges.  Misbehavior that continues will be dealt with between parent, teacher, and student.

    Behavior Rewards/Consequences:

Each student will have a Class Dojo avatar.  Each day we will review the points earned/lost during the course of that school day.  At the end of the week, students will receive rewards based on their point totals for that week.

Tardies – Any student that is not in their seat when the 8:00 a.m. bell rings is considered tardy.  Students must get a notice from the office.  5 tardies equals 1 absence.

Discipline Referral:  If a student receives 7 discipline referrals they will not be allowed to participate in any extracurricular activities, any UIL event or any field trip.

Absences – Please send a note explaining the nature of an absence.  Please note that family vacations or personal trips are considered unexcused.  An absence will be unexcused without a note.  Also note that if a student has an excessive number of absences, they may not be allowed to attend extracurricular activities.  If you need to pick up your child before school is dismissed, you will need to go to the elementary office for a signed dismissal slip before we can release them from class.  If a student leaves early for reasons other than a doctor or dentist appointment, funeral, or other emergency, this will be unexcused.  Also, if your child is going home with someone else, we must have a written note giving permission.  Students without a note will have to go home in their regular after school manner.

Questions:  If at any time during the school year you have a question or concern, please come and ask me first.  In our school policy, it states that a chain of command needs to be followed.  First, discuss the question or concern with the teacher.  If you do not get satisfaction, then see the building principal or superintendent.  We hope this problem will not arise, but just in case it does, please follow these guidelines.
